The engine coolant temp sensor was a common failure on older cars, perhaps your car is the start of the newer ones failing or a fluke. While driving 40 mph there was a warning light that illuminated stating there was a failure with the vehicle. For the record, I called vw and requested a tow to service and was told I would have to drive the car in. I dropped my radiator fan shroud several months back and ended up cracking the accessory fan blade. I believe the intake manifold failed, and caused the loss of engine power. It was taken to the dealer multiple times for the same problem. If it's ambient when the engine is cold it's right. Currently I have to disconnect the battery when I stop the car as the fan continues to come on randomly and erratically.
Or you may just be struggling to keep it highway-approved. Once again, it was replaced this time under warranty. I then figured the salt might be getting into one of the connectors and creating a short, so I sprayed water into the fan area in front and back when the motor was warmed up.
