Your pickup chassis can ordered with up to a 10-inch step over the rear suspension, while the front chassis step is available up to 4-inches more then stock. Be sure to always wear your safety equipment to ensure safe operation when welding anything. You're correct: both brands of steering box braces are for the front of the cross member and attach to the front 2 steering box bolts. Large tires and even street or mild off-road driving can eventually crack the frames out. We include bed-and-body mounts in their stock locations on all of our chassis as shown in this photo.
It's actually a really simple design. You'll take loose an unnecessary clamp that holds down a brake line to a crossmember, enlarge the hole it was in, take loose your steering gearbaox, place the brace in, and bolt everything back together. The precision cuts that this type of equipment makes is fascinating yet confusing as Rob swore to us that this piece really becomes a frame rail. Also I had to grind out some additional material to make my brace clear my proportioning valve, so don't be surprised by that. No other chassis manufacturer offers this 4-corner stance adjustability as a standard feature. All are in-process of repair. Take a look at any 73 - 87 Chassis, and you will find no bracket or crossmember welded to the frame.
We moved the chassis over to the assembly room and figured that the easiest way to remove the rear suspension was to drop the shocks, Panhard bar and the top spring plates that attach the springs to the frame. Cleaned the inside of the frame and welded the back side of each crack, then dressed the weld reinforcement down to the original surface to restore the frame's integrity and appearance. I did this to my '91 Crew Cab, but I returned the reinforcement plate. Now the reinforcment kit requires welding to install. The two knob adjustable model is our top of the line. I would really like to also use a brace for the rear 2 bolts since the worst damage to my frame occurred at the rear lower bolt hole. ~Chuck Somebody not sure who but I can find out makes a bolt on bracket that bolts into the inside of the frame rail on the side with the box, and then goes and bolts somewhere near that crossmember directly beneath it.
Remember, all of our chassis have an adjustable stance in the front-and-rear about 4-inches. Two ½-inch Allen bolts secure the bracket to the upper A-arm tower. I much prefer an upper mount that will control motion in all axes and disperse the energy over a broad area of the frame. Since how necessary this part is has been covered, I won't explain it to you. This has made short bed models worth more later on based by their limited production, and the desire to use them as daily transportation. This problem is compounded with the addition of a lift and bigger tires.
Rich, I've been admiring your work in the attached pictures to this post. You don't want it rubbing the valve or any of your hard lines. The failure generally occurs as the steering gear pivots back-and-forth around an axis intersecting the top rear and lower front gearbox mounting bolts, tincanning the frame. This allows these sliders to be custom tailored to any vehicle, yet no tubing bender or tube notcher is needed- All the parts are premade and ready to install. Also, the rivets that are installed at the factory wear as the frame flexes and get loose. Jump on to discuss axles, suspensions, engines, mudders, 4x4s and more. We also offer 3-styles of Panhard bars: the one shown on top of the housing, our Low Roll-Center Panhard bar that goes behind the housing and is parallel with the housing, and a diagonal link style.
Ends should be staggered, so as not to create an abrupt change in frame rigidity, which can eventually cause fatigue and culminate in renewed cracking. Included in this Kit is- - 100% Pre-Welded 1. In this photo we removed the bed floor to show you how the cross members and wheel tubs fit in place. With the rails off the truck slide each cross member in place on bolt them up. These Heavy Duty Rock Sliders are Pre welded, But do not have the Mounting Legs installed. See the next two photos.
Care to buy us a beer? Next we unbolted the two bolts that hold the trailing arms in place to the trailing arm cross-member and rolled out the whole thing in one piece. This chassis features the optional power Mustang rack that bolts in the same mounts as the standard manual rack. So, I fabricated torque arms for the steering gear mounting that rigidly bolt to the gear through the frame and anchor to the front crossmember at its center. Bolt-in Steering Box Brace Kit and Weld-in Frame Repair kit. Tack welded the ends and intersections of the cracks, then welded each for full penetration. If you would like more information about the repair kit or its installation, please contact us by phone or email. Notice I avoided the radius of the flange-to-framerail face to help allow for frame flex without over-concentrating stress into the flange.
If you are going to raise or lower the bed, let us know and custom bed mounts can be included in your order. The bracket shown above the frame rail is one of the 8 stock bed-mounts we can provide to make this chassis a direct replacement. All rear brake packages feature a parking brake. In this photo, the brackets are tack-welded to the 3-inch diameter axle-housing tubes. The good news is reproduction sheet metal is available from Classic Industries for these models, as well as a bolt on, back half frame kit from No Limit Engineering.
Looking to put rock sliders on your vehicle? Interestingly enough, cracks propagate along nearly identical paths from vehicle-to-vehicle. This crossmember adds more strength to the frame since it is welded on the inside of the rails and on the outside of the rails as well. I liked your rear shock braces more, but for those without any fabricating skills, a little is better then nothing. I ordered and installed mine to be on the safe side but when I went to install it I found my frame had cracked and been shoddily repaired already, so I was very glad to add the brace. The bolt patterns are the same and some of the contours in the frame are the same but not all.
